So looking back at older posts I realized that I have crept up on year since I started the journey of getting back in shape. I show my first run training for the 2013 Goofy Race and a Half Challenge occurring on September 5th, 2012 with a starting weight 257 pounds (although I show a weight of 260 on September 9th, 2012).
Back when I started I was just writing my thoughts in a word processor document and I later translated that document to various posts on the blog when I decided to go that direction. So the first dated posts I put up were for September 9th, 2012 – one year ago today.
I actually put up 2 different posts for that day – one about my training and general goals (http://biggoofyrunner.com/sept-9-2012-sunday-post-1/) and the second about my weight history (http://biggoofyrunner.com/sept-9-2012-sunday-post-2-about-my-weight/).
So now that I am a year into this I think I need to do a bit of a review of what I have accomplished and have a quick look at where maybe I should be going from here.
Some stats to start….
Miles – training and races: 1255.85
Starting weight: 260 pounds
Current weight: 218 pounds
Weight lost: 42 pounds
Sept 5th 2012 treadmill run: 3.14 miles in 30 minutes for an average pace of 6.28 mph
Sept 5th 2013 treadmill run: 4.16 miles in 30 minutes for an average pace of 8.32 mph
Pace improvement: approx. 32.5% (at least over 30 minutes)
Number of races run: 3 half marathons, 2 full marathons (including the Goofy Challenge)
Race time – half: Disney Half – 2:20:35 WPS Half – 1:56:13 Run for Diabetes 1:49:54
Race time – half improvement: just shy of 31 minutes (and still improving…hopefully)
Race time – full: Disney Full – 5:25:54 Manitoba Marathon – 4:40:07.6
Race time – full improvement: just shy of 46 minutes (from January to June)
So the numbers definitely show improvements and I can certainly see that I am continuing to improve.
Thankfully the weight is starting to move again – after the Goofy 2013 was over my weight stayed pretty stagnant (with about 5 pounds or so) until early July and since then I have managed to get things moving again.
Overall I am very pleased with what I have done so far – maybe a bit disappointed that I had a 6 month period there where I didn’t lose much weight but on the positive side of that at least I didn’t gain. Without any weight loss though I do show improvements in my pace and endurance over that period.
So where do I go from here?
Well the next 2 half marathons I have booked into are still coming up – Winnipeg Rotary Club half on September 22nd and the Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Services (WFPS) half marathon on October 19th. I will be trying to keep training intensity up for the next (just under) 6 weeks – my hope is that I can get the weight down below 200 pounds (for a total of 60 pounds weight loss) and my pace up so that I can set a new personal best for the half distance.
My current personal best for a half is 1:46:11 set way back in 2002 (when I was 31? Wow – getting old) but I just did 1:49:54 on September 2nd which is only 3 minutes 43 seconds off. If I can keep up the intensity and get the weight down it should be more than possible to break this record – hell weight loss alone should be enough to make this happen but I can’t get complacent – need to push and push hard!
After the 2 half marathons are done though….what next? That will take some more thought.
