Alrighty – so things have definitely gone off the rails here for the past while.
I had great intentions to get blogging and running again to train for the Manitoba Marathon in June 2018…but I ran into some issues.
For a year or so, I struggled with my right Achilles tendon and right knee and I finally was able to get that sorted out (had to change the shoes I was using) but now I am having recurring issues with my left ankle.
I can run without pain but the ankle has a tendency to lock up when I’m not moving and can be very painful to walk on if I have been idle for a while. Since I drive a desk at work, the pain can be frequent.
This has been limiting my running to maybe 2-3 times a week and rarely anything over a slow 3.1 miles as I didn’t want to push the ankle too hard. This has also meant that I have been actively training myself to get slower and to not be as good at longer distances…kind of not what I am looking for.
So finally a few weeks ago, I decided I really needed to shake things up – so I hit the treadmill, hard – I pushed faster and farther than I have in a while – all with the intention of breaking through the issues…or actually causing a real issue that I could figure out and fix.
The first run I did that for worked great and my ankle felt quite good after, this leads me to think that running may not be what is causing the ankle issue but one run doesn’t prove anything – so I will need to do more…
Then I got sick with some kind of flu – it has been a week now and I am still fighting headaches, a cough and getting the last of the crap out of my lungs – definitely a brutal one that now has Heather and our son down as well (luckily our daughter has already gotten through it and is all better).
I think I am almost back to the point where I could run again, so I will probably be trying that tomorrow if I feel up to it and I will see what I can do.
The fallout from this though is that I am not going to be running the Manitoba Marathon this year after all. I may not even run the half at that event – we are less than 5 weeks to go and while I know I could finish a half marathon, I don’t see it being worth it financially to do the race – instead I am going to plan to do some races in September that I will be in better shape for and that will give me a better shot at good corral placement for the Dopey Challenge in January.
The plan is still to do the Dopey Challenge with my brother, but of course I am waiting along with everyone to see what runDisney is doing and is planning on announcing at the beginning of June for registration. Hopefully it is all good and we get spots.
So in the near term, hopefully I will be blogging more and doing YouTube videos as I get myself motivated to run again and get some much needed weight loss in!
Stay tuned!
