Dopey Challenge 2019 training – week 7 – interesting times

by

Hi everyone!

Another interesting week of Dopey Challenge training! Not quite “may you live in interesting times!” interesting but still interesting.

I started the week with a 7.3 mile outside run on country gravel roads on Monday – that was a good run and I was happy to get that one done after setbacks last week. This was an unscheduled run but needed to be done.

On Tuesday I was supposed to do 4 miles but I was feeling the run from the day before so instead my daughter and I took the dogs for a longer walk to stretch the legs and have some daddy/daughter time.

And then on Wednesday, our son was in for some dental surgery and things kind of got thrown out of whack so I didn’t do a scheduled 7 mile run.

Thursday I had taken the truck in for service and the service location is a mile or so from work so I walked to work after I dropped it off and walked to pick it up after to get some miles in. And then I got in my scheduled 4 mile run Thursday night.

On Saturday I was scheduled for 7 miles but I decided to do my weekly longer run instead – so I did 11 miles while Heather and the kids were out at curling in the morning.

I was pretty tired Sunday morning so I did a longer walk with the dogs to loosen up the legs. Then we did a few hours walking around the convention center checking out the local Comicon. That was a first for the kids and they enjoyed it. After we got home we put up some Halloween decorations and I then did a nice solid outside run of 4.4 miles.

It wasn’t a conventional running week but I think I was pretty decent at getting my scheduled miles in – and I got the long run in which is the major thing!

One very interesting thing I noticed this week is how different my treadmill runs have become compared to my outdoor runs. I used to do my weekday runs on the treadmill including my speed and hill work and then I would do my longer outdoor runs outside on the weekends – and I never really noticed too much difference between indoors and outdoors in terms of effort (on the treadmill I always run at 1% incline at a minimum to make up for wind resistance, etc). But over the last couple years I have been feeling like this new treadmill we had gotten was beating me up and I really couldn’t put my finger on it. But this past week I noticed that I was running outside at a faster pace more comfortably than I can do a slower pace on the treadmill. This is very strange because treadmills have a tendency to be an easier run than an outdoor run – but that is opposite of what I have been seeing with this particular treadmill. I’m not sure what is going on with that but I need to figure it out so I can at least see how the treadmill equates to an outdoor run.

Very strange.

Anyway – that is all for this week’s recap – please stay tuned for the “interesting times” ahead!
