Dopey?

by

So I haven’t been watching the runDisney site lately so I was a bit surprised to see this:

Disney has shifted the 5k on the Disney World marathon weekend to the Thursday, added a brand new 10k around Epcot on the Friday and then kept the Half on Saturday and the Full on Sunday.

They have also made the Dopey official – previously people had called running the 5k on top of the Goofy Race and a Half Challenge the Dopey but the new Disney approved version is the 4 full races.  So 5k, 10k, half marathon and full marathon over 4 days – 48.6 miles…  interesting.

This would give the runner 6 medals – one for each race and then the Goofy medal and the Dopey medal.

Registration is open now for the Runners World Challenge and normal registration opens on April 9th.

I’m not sure what to think about this – I have to say I am tempted (since I have been looking for a new challenge) but I don’t think it would be in the cards for me this year.  I will have to do some serious thinking about it.

I also wonder what impact the 10k will have for attendance in the half marathon – will the more casual runner opt to do the 10k instead and thereby reduce some of the congestion for the half marathon?

What will this do for registration in the 5k – I think a lot of runners did the 5k with their families the day before the half but will they come to Disney a day earlier to do that now?

I am very interested to see how this change plays out for Disney and I give them kudos for trying something new.
