7 week short update!

Ok… a short couple mile walk on the treadmill tonight. Strangely that is a win for the day.

Over the past couple weeks I have been slowly getting better mentally for my running. I have had some decent runs and I have been slowly increasing my mileage again. Still not where I need to be for Dopey Challenge in January but it was a start.

I was also getting my weight to move in the right direction finally.

So YAY!! Positive stuff for the first time in a while.

And then this past weekend we did a couple day road trip…how in the world do you gain 5.5 pounds in 2 days?

I can’t work out what happened – sure we ate out but I was very conscious of what I was eating and we did a lot of walking. So I’m not sure what is going on there.

My stomach did feel like crap the whole trip and I had the last 2 days off work sick for stomach issues as well.

So yeah – I was supposed to run and do some speed work tonight but even walking caused some stomach turns making a couple miles of walking was more than I could have expected.

But hopefully I am over whatever is going on with my stomach and I will be back at it. I have a rough plan for the next 50 days before we leave for Dopey Challenge in Disney World. I won’t be in great shape, or good shape really but as long as I am used to moving I will be able to have fun with it. And that is what my plan is for the next 50 days – move, move and move some more just so I am used to it again.

Well – that was a short one but I will be looking to get more posts up regularly from here on out.

Happy running!

Wednesday is 10 weeks until Dopey Challenge travel day!

So on Wednesday it makes it 10 weeks until Dopey Challenge travel day.

I will also be going to a funeral that day.

I think that makes it time to ponder and evaluate.

For the past couple weeks I have been improving on my running – getting more than one run in a week at least. I have been going farther and trying to do some speed work as well. Beyond that I have also been exercising the dogs more and just trying to be healthier in general (eating better, drinking less Coke, etc).

This has paid some dividends. I am probably down around 5 pounds and my head has been a bit clearer.

Ten weeks is not a huge amount of time to fix where I am but I can make a good start so that I can have a good running year in 2018.

So the goal is to continue my slow progression back to some kind of running shape:

  1. Gradually increase the number of days I run per week – goal to back to 5 days a week within 5 weeks so that I can be used to the back to back running days for Dopey.
  2. Increase overall weekly mileage (shoot to get at least one 50 mile week by end of December)
  3. Increase distance of weekly long run (normally like to have 2-3 20 milers before a marathon but I will probably have to settle to have one 20 mile run done by end of December)
  4. Continue to reduce calories and eat healthier – continue with the weight loss – hard to set a goal here but if I look back at what I was doing 5 years ago at the start of this blog – 10 pounds should be a good goal and 15 could be doable.
  5. Try to stay mentally settled

Post more – writing about my workouts helps internalize my goals and highlights the progress I have made – all positive things. Goal is to get something up 2-3 times a week to start and then get back into writing a post run recap every day I run.

Not much else to say right now besides saying I have a desire to get healthier again after my slow crash over the past couple years.

Wish me luck as I rebuild…again.

OK – got the site back up…maybe I should write something? Status report

Alrighty – the site is back up and running after some issues with the hosting…so maybe I should actually use the site?

Brief synopsis:

Where do I stand running wise?

Not good – I feel like I am pretty much back at square one. I did a decent 5 mile run tonight so it probably isn’t as doom and gloom as I think in my head but it still isn’t great. This means I am basically going to do my standard 18 week training program for the Dopey Challenge in January. Nothing fancy – just do the miles, follow the program, and train myself to make running a habit again.

Where do I stand weight wise?

Heavy – I stand heavy. With my running not happening and lots and lots of stress my weight has gone from a slow climb to deciding to take the elevator. I bloody gained 5 pounds on a 4 day road trip to see the total eclipse for crying out loud and that trip included lots of walking.

I have started to make headway on bringing it back down but it is going to take time and commitment.

So what the heck is the problem?

Stress mostly. In a moment stress can be a good motivator but steady constant stress will kill you.

I know running can help but grabbing that life line has been tough over the past 6 months or so. Which is part of the reason I need to make it a habit again, so I don’t even think about it and convince myself to not run.

Shoes appear to have been an issue too. I have been feeling beat up after every run and that was pretty demoralizing too. But I think I have the shoes figure out now and I can run without my joints (especially my Achilles tendon) feeling destroyed.

Rough game plan to stop being a slug and get back to where I want to be?

  • Follow the 18 week plan.
  • Get strict on my diet again.
  • Pay close attention to my gear and make sure to make changes as soon as necessary. Trust my body.
  • Write / blog – vent my frustration and brag my accomplishments – get the good and the bad out there so that I don’t dwell too much on the negative.
  • Train with my son (doing the 10k with him for Dopey Challenge in January as well as the 5k with the whole family)
  • Resistance training

More dedicate posts will come out getting into more detail but I wanted to get something out to avoid the procrastination.

Anyway, I will cut this one off here and talk to you folks later. Happy running!

Trying something new – YouTube video talking about my plans to get my diet, weight and running back on track.

Hi everyone!

Just a short post today to provide a link to a YouTube video I have put up talking about my thoughts and plans to get my weight back under control as well as my thoughts for upcoming races.

The video was taken on July 3rd, 2017 (posted on July 28th) so I have been using the fridge I mention for a while and it does seem to be helping. I have definitely saved enough from skipping fast food meals to have paid for the fridge!

So this is about 3 weeks I have had the fridge (and I was out of the office on vacation for one of them) so I am still in the beginning stages but I am starting to feel better as I detox away from so much fast food.

Having wraps that I make at lunch (and during breaks) is definitely helping keep the food tasting fresh and I am mixing things up with sometimes having mustard for extra flavour and sometimes using just a touch of lime juice (lime works better for turkey than it does for ham…).

I am definitely happy with the purchase and I am showing positive results so far using it.

Any feedback on the video is appreciated as I try to decide if I want to keep doing these kinds of vlog posts or not.

Have a good weekend!

3.5 miles yesterday and 5 miles today – with my son joining in for 1

I managed to squeak in 3.5 Dopey Challenge training miles last night on the treadmill after I thought I had lost my opportunity to get the miles in earlier in the day. So that was a nice surprise…time and energy at the same time!

I then started this morning with some pool and hot tub time to get a relaxing start to the day before my wife, Heather, had to head out.

She took our daughter (K) with her so it was a good opportunity to grab our son (T) and get him moving and excited to start training for the 10k race during the Disney World Marathon weekend.

The four of us are signed up for the 5k on the Thursday, T and I are doing the 10k and then I have the half and full to round out the Dopey Challenge for the weekend.

It should be an interesting trip but to make sure T finds it enjoyable, I need to make sure he gets trained up and stays excited about the race. He has done a couple 5ks before but it would be good if he could do the 10k with energy left over to have fun that day.

So training it is!

In the end he did 1 mile on Heather’s treadmill (which I am not allowed to touch in case I break it…again). He did some running and some walking and tried a bit of speed to test himself out. And I watched to make sure he was being safe. (full treadmill safety briefing supplied before he got on) He did great and maintained his enthusiasm, which is phenomenal.

I did 5 miles on the more robust treadmill (that I have still managed to break once…so far) getting in some speed work. This was good – while I am not as fast as I once was, the speed work does help you feel more alive. A very helpful thing to do to get past what can seem like trudging when doing longer runs on the treadmill.

A good couple days of running as I start getting myself properly motivated to train again.

Weight on the other hand is odd – my weight jumped 3 pounds in 2 days?? I believe this is due to stress and anxiety so I am really focusing on trying to relax more to back off the stress. I am also starting to more closely regiment what I am eating to help both the stress and the weight.

Stay tuned for more!!
