Just a short run tonight to see how well my new Hoka Bondi 3s will work. More specifically I tried one run with these shoes before and had an abrasion on my ankle because of them – the run tonight was to test out a theory on how to prevent the chafing.
See the post on the abrasion linked above for more info but the fix attempt today was to use medical tape to cover the area where the abrasion was and see what happens.
As a nice surprise, it worked!
Which is good – on a whim I signed up for the Winnipeg Hypothermic Half Marathon coming up this Sunday and I want the trail soles of the Bondi to run through the ice and snow on the trails!
I really hadn’t planned to do this run but looking at the running I have been doing the past couple weeks, I realized that I need to focus and a race may be the slap I need to get things back on track. That is the hope anyway!
Damn it’s going to be cold.
I have definitely not been pushing the speed or the miles the way I should be lately. A few factors played into that I think. A week vacation and a wicked cold with a major cough pretty much killed most of the last 2 weeks. Before that I think I was in a bit of a post Dopey Challenge funk.
I may have finally shaken that funk (and the cough) and hopefully I can start pushing myself to get my speed back up.
Tonight I started out at 7 mph for a couple minutes then bumped it up to 8 mph for 3 before backing down to 7 mph for a minute. Then 8 for a minute, 7 for a minute and 8 for 2. I repeated that 5 min cycle a second time and then decided it was time to push a bit harder. I switched to 1 min at 7, 1 min at 9, 1 min at 7 and then 2 minutes at 9 mph for 3 five minute cycles until I hit the 30 minute mark.
It was definitely a tough go but it certainly feels to have broken back into being able to do 4 miles in under a half hour. I was in that ballpark regularly back in October but after the treadmill issues I had in November and December, I haven’t been in this range for 3 months. I have some work to do to make up some lost ground here!
After taking the weekend off to cough (well that’s what it seemed like anyway), I managed to get in a decent run tonight.
I did a minute a 7 mph and then pushed up to 9 mph intending to go for a minute at that speed but my lungs rebelled, so I backed off to 8 mph after about 30 seconds and finished out the minute. I then did another minute at 7 mph and 2 more at 8 mph to complete a 5 minute cycle. I then repeated the same cycles until I hit the 4 mile mark and shut it down.
Definitely not my fastest run but much better than I was expecting considering how my weekend was!
